What does the Bible Say about Gratitude?

  • “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you” (I Thessalonians 5:18).
  • “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15, NIV).
  • “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6, NIV).
  • “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe” (Hebrews 12:28, New International Version).

1. How can you practice gratitude today?  
2. What gifts do you have that you think were given by God, and how can you express thanks for them?
3. How can you get into the habit of expressing gratitude for three things in your life each day? Many studies show that this simple practice has huge benefits (longevity, quality of life, quality of connections, etc)
4. Comparison kills gratitude. How does our current society make it hard to be grateful?
